Barry Bannan, captain of Sheffield Wednesday, has renewed his contract with the financially struggling Championship team. The 35-year-old midfielder, who joined the club in 2015, had his previous contract expire in June but continued training with the first-team during pre-season.
The club is facing a transfer embargo and EFL fee restrictions through the end of the summer window due to unpaid transfer fees. There are concerns about their ability to play their opening match against Leicester next Sunday. A pre-season match against Burnley, planned to be held privately on Saturday, was called off after reports of Wednesday players refusing to participate.
