The Sheffield Wednesday captain, Barry Bannan, has extended his stay with the financially troubled Championship club by signing a new contract. The 35-year-old midfielder has been committed to the team since 2015 and continued training with the first-team squad even after his previous contract expired in June.
The club currently faces a transfer embargo and EFL fee restrictions due to unpaid transfer fees. There are doubts about their ability to play the opening match against Leicester next Sunday. A planned pre-season match against Burnley was canceled after players reportedly refused to participate.
