Assistant coach Anthony Barry is employing psychological, tactical, and physical profiling to aid Thomas Tuchel in giving the England team an advantage at the World Cup.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry’s life was quite different. Now focused on helping Thomas Tuchel achieve World Cup victory next summer, Barry was once a player for Accrington Stanley in League Two. As his career in the lower Football League divisions and non-league was winding down, he took the first step in a journey that would define him by volunteering as the Accrington Under-16s coach.
“It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” Barry recalls with a smile. “I was hooked. I’d found what I was destined to do and I thought about what it could become. I’m pretty sure nobody else could see it. But that’s part of dreams.”
