Anthony Barry, the assistant coach, is focused on using psychological, tactical, and physical profiling to give Thomas Tuchel’s England team an advantage at the World Cup. Ten years ago, Barry’s life was quite different. He was playing for Accrington Stanley in League Two, nearing the end of a career in the lower divisions of the Football League and in non-league. He had started his journey into coaching by taking a voluntary role as the Accrington Under-16s coach. “It was in the evenings, on a third of a pitch, with 11 v 11 games, flat balls, not enough bibs,” Barry recalls with a smile. “I was hooked. I’d found my calling and envisioned its potential. I’m pretty sure nobody else could see it. But that’s part of dreams.”
