The New York Yankees completed a trade on Saturday, acquiring utility infielder Amed Rosario from the Washington Nationals. According to Jack Curry of the YES Network, the Yankees will send right-handed reliever Clayton Beeter and 18-year-old outfield prospect Browm Martinez to Washington.
Rosario, 29, has a .270 batting average and a 105 wRC+ over 47 games this season. Notably proficient against left-handed pitchers, he boasts a .299 average and .816 OPS. His low strikeout rate makes him a valuable addition to a Yankees lineup in need of a right-handed hitter following Aaron Judge’s impending IL stint due to an elbow strain.
For Rosario, this move marks his seventh team in nine seasons. He debuted with the Mets in 2017 and was part of the Francisco Lindor trade to Cleveland four years later. Eventually, the Guardians traded him to the Dodgers for Noah Syndergaard.
The Yankees will trade Beeter, who was acquired in the Joey Gallo trade of 2022. Beeter, now 27, has a 9.82 ERA over five MLB appearances. Rosario is expected to primarily play third base against left-handers, platooning with Ryan McMahon. Despite defensive challenges, the Yankees value his offensive contribution.
This trade likely signals the end of Oswald Peraza’s time with the Yankees. Peraza has struggled, batting .190 since his 2022 debut.
While Rosario is a solid addition, expectations should be modest. Known for singles and doubles rather than power, he has never hit more than 11 home runs in a season. Despite this, he puts the ball in play consistently. Fans can anticipate a slightly improved version of Isiah Kiner-Falefa, as Rosario has hit 10 or more home runs three times, peaking with 15 in 2019.
The Yankees may continue trading before Thursday’s deadline. They still require bullpen strength and potentially another starter while awaiting Luis Gil’s return from shoulder rehab in August.
