The New York Yankees are advancing one of their brightest young talents, George Lombard Jr., to Double-A Somerset. The news comes following the team’s series loss to the Tampa Bay Rays and highlights the organization’s confidence in the 19-year-old prospect.
Lombard Jr., selected 26th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, has been outstanding in High-A competition to start the 2025 season. In just 24 games and 82 at-bats, he’s posted a .329 batting average with an impressive .496 on-base percentage and a .983 OPS. His early season stats include one home run, 13 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and 23 walks against 22 strikeouts—showcasing not just power, but plate discipline and speed.
Though he’s most comfortable at shortstop, Lombard has also been gaining experience at second and third base. This defensive versatility increases his value and could accelerate his progression through the Yankees’ system. Many fans are already imagining a future left-side infield tandem of Lombard and rising star Anthony Volpe.
During spring training, Lombard continued to impress with a solid .808 OPS. His performance even drew praise from Yankees captain Aaron Judge, who highlighted Lombard’s defensive skills and accurate throws across the diamond.
“I was really impressed,” Judge said. “Seeing him move over to third base, he’s got a great arm. He was accurate. He was hitting every single guy in the chest. Smooth hands. Anthony Volpe is one of the best shortstops I’ve ever seen, and you put [Lombard] right next to him at third base—it’s pretty cool to see that on the left side of the infield.”
With his promotion to Double-A, George Lombard Jr. is taking another promising step forward in what could become a future MLB career with the Yankees.
