Arsenal and Manchester United are set to encounter familiar rivals in an updated competition that has shown increased competitiveness. The new phase of the Women’s Champions League format kicks off on Wednesday and Thursday, featuring four playoff first legs. Arsenal and Manchester United are among eight teams competing to join Barcelona, Lyon, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich, who secured automatic spots in the quarter-finals after finishing in the top four of the league phase.
Similar to the men’s competition, there has been a shift from a group stage to a league format. This change, however, was met with scepticism since the UWCL group stage was introduced only during the 2021-22 season and was considered a significant progression in its early stages.
