The outcome of Sunday’s League Cup semi-final could be pivotal in determining whether Celtic opts for an unexpected reappointment or seeks a new managerial direction.
It seems imprudent to be misled by Martin O’Neill’s self-effacing remarks. The 73-year-old firmly maintains that his return to Celtic is temporary. “I believe they’re on the hunt for someone [else] fairly soon,” he stated on Friday. “I don’t see this as a revival. It’s just a placeholder.”
Celtic Park is still reeling, not so much from Brendan Rodgers’ resignation on Monday but from the ensuing harsh criticism from chief shareholder Dermot Desmond directed at the former manager.
