Wales and Northern Ireland may face off for a finals spot
Ireland to meet Denmark or North Macedonia if victorious
Wales and Northern Ireland are set to compete for a place at the 2026 World Cup if they overcome playoff semi-finals of varying difficulty in March.
The teams would clash in Cardiff for a spot in next year’s main event if Wales triumphs at home against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Northern Ireland succeeds in a challenging trip to Italy, who, despite being out of form, are expected to be strong contenders. It is an especially appealing draw for Craig Bellamy’s Wales, who are in high spirits after a 7-1 victory over North Macedonia on Tuesday and are just two home wins away from returning to the world stage.
