Team Puerto Rico may withdraw from the 2026 World Baseball Classic due to “insurance constraints” impacting eight to ten players.
One of them is New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, who is expected to be ready for spring training following an elbow debridement procedure in October, his second in three seasons.
A statement from the MLB Players’ Association confirmed Lindor’s absence from the tournament, citing WBC insurance issues as the reason for his ineligibility, despite his disappointment.
Since the 2023 World Baseball Classic, insurance rates have surged after severe injuries to then-Mets closer Edwin Diaz and Houston Astros player Jose Altuve. National Financial Partners (NFP), MLB’s insurance broker, has become more selective in its coverage.
Players without insurance can still participate if their MLB team covers potential injury costs, a rare scenario. This situation presents a challenge for Puerto Rico, which has a smaller talent pool due to its population. With WBC rosters announced Thursday, replacing these players seems unlikely, affecting Puerto Rico’s contention chances.
The insurance selectiveness is questionable. Yankees star Aaron Judge, who had past injuries, and American center fielder Byron Buxton, who missed many games since 2018, were approved.
Recent surgeries and extended IL stays appear to be disqualifying factors, though the criteria seem inconsistent. Shohei Ohtani, who had major surgeries, is barred only from pitching.
This situation raises concerns about possible preferential treatment to facilitate a championship rematch between the U.S. and Japan. Miguel Rojas of the Dodgers, prohibited due to age, questioned his exclusion from Team Venezuela while being fit to play in MLB.
Team Puerto Rico’s operations manager, Joey Sola, criticized the process, noting disparities in how players are evaluated for WBC participation compared to players on other teams who earn significantly more.
