More Controversy? Bring it On
Last month, the ClubWPT Gold ‘Gold Rush’ promotion sparked one of the year’s biggest stories when Jesse Yaginuma made a controversial comeback against James Carroll in the WSOP Millionaire Maker. Daniel Negreanu called out the WPT for what he deemed the ‘sleaziest’ promotion in his lengthy poker career.
Most players disagreed, viewing it as positive when operators enhance poker tournaments. ClubWPT Gold was unfazed, rolling out their Event #81 “last longer” promotion, offering a $50,000 prize to the ClubWPT Gold player advancing the farthest in the WSOP Main Event while displaying a gold patch.
a €100,000 ($116,984) incentive for 30 qualifiers
By month’s end, it’s WPT Global’s turn to stir things up by offering a €100,000 ($116,984) incentive for the 30 players qualifying for the Summer In Dublin Main Event via a €720 ($842) package freeroll on its platform. Will this Irish Poker Tour (IPT) event create controversy? It’s possible if one of the lucky 30 makes the final table.
Expecting a Huge Turnout
IPT CEO Fintan Gavin promised a €250,000 ($292,464) guarantee for the festival, primarily for the Main Event, but he anticipates it could exceed expectations and surpass €250,000 by the end of registration. Two weeks ago, IPT ambassador Tanya Masters promoted the poker event happening at Dublin’s Green Isle Hotel from July 23rd to 27th on ‘The Chip Race’ podcast.
Masters highlighted the festival as a “must-attend” on the IPT calendar with a €300 ($351) Main Event and side events ranging from €150 ($176) to €400 ($468). She emphasized IPT’s commitment to a welcoming atmosphere:
“The buzz is always fantastic at IPT events. Everyone is eagerly anticipating ‘Summer In Dublin,’ especially since IPT announced a guaranteed first prize of €50,000 ($58,519) and WPT Global revealed the freerolls and the €100,000 promotion. I foresee a huge turnout.”
IPT Tour Tournament Director Donald MacAonghusa is confident in attracting a significant field, highlighting the operation’s grassroots nature that draws players nationwide. Speaking with VSO News, he explained: “Bringing poker to the people is a longstanding goal of the IPT; WPT Global has embraced this approach and elevated it.” The added money promotion has captivated the Irish poker community, who have been eagerly participating in WPT Global’s nightly freerolls.
Just the Start
Live poker costs have climbed steadily. Post-pandemic operator expenses have surged, understandably resulting in higher costs for players. However, increased rake and registration fees deter players, particularly those who scrutinize the details.
Gavin was astonished when he first learned
The solution is for online operators to reinvest value into live experiences. By adding 30 packages and a potential €100,000 bonus, WPT Global has done just that. Gavin was astonished by the site’s proposal:
“I thought it was crazy, but I loved it. It’s an extravagant promotion. WPT Global just wants to give money away.”
WPT Global Ireland’s Marketing Manager, Cameron Soane, insisted there’s a method behind this approach:
“WPT Global is eager to enhance this Irish Poker Tour event. Poker in Ireland is special and historic, and the Irish market is crucial to us.”
Soane hinted at more promotions to follow:
“This is just the beginning – the first of many promotions we have planned for Ireland. I hope we have to sweat over that final table in Dublin. €100k is life-changing money, and we wish our qualifiers the best in their pursuit of it.”
‘Summer In Dublin’ will mark the thirteenth IPT stop in 2025, potentially lucky for the winner, considering the enhanced first prize and the €100,000 WPT Global bonus if the champion is a freeroll qualifier.
