The title “First Division” for the second level of English football stems from its rich history, especially after the Premier League’s inception in 1992. Initially, the Football League First Division was the top-tier from 1888, with clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal vying for national success. The Premier League replaced this top tier in 1992 when 22 clubs split to create a more commercially viable league, capitalizing on lucrative TV rights. The top level of the Football League then became the First Division, although it was no longer the highest level. In 2004, a rebranding saw the First Division become the Football League Championship (now EFL Championship), with the Second and Third Divisions turning into League One and League Two, respectively. The term “First Division” thus recalls the pre-1992 era when the Football League was central to English football.
