Vittorio Pozzo: A Football Immortal Forged in the Trenches 2025 - SCCG Management

Vittorio Pozzo, the sole manager to secure two World Cup victories in 1934 and 1938, is acknowledged as one of the most successful in the tournament’s history. His early years in an Italian Alpine regiment during World War I significantly influenced his character. Pozzo himself attributed his coaching style, marked by discipline, resilience, and leadership, to the experiences he faced from 1915 to 1918.

Born in Turin in 1886, Pozzo developed a passion for football after witnessing Manchester United play during his youth. By 1911, he returned to Italy, played a role in establishing Torino FC, and managed its initial teams. When Italy joined the war in May 1915, the 29-year-old promptly volunteered as a lieutenant in the 1st Alpini Regiment, known for their expertise in high-altitude warfare.
