Utah State’s Offensive Challenges
Utah State enters this game with a 1-0 record after securing a 28-16 victory over UTEP last week. But their offense should face significant hurdles against the Texas A&M defense. Utah State averaged just 16.0 points per game and ranked 126th in third-down conversion percentage at 16.7% last year. One good game against a bad UTEP team might not be enough to erase that against an opponent like A&M.
Bryson Barnes got the win as the starting quarterback for Utah State last week. He completed 19 of his 28 pass attempts for 233 yards and a touchdown against UTEP. This will be a much better litmus test for what Barnes brings to the table as the signal caller for Utah State going forward.
Texas A&M’s Offensive Firepower
Texas A&M is also 1-0 after a 42-24 win over UTSA. They got an encouraging start out of quarterback Marcel Reed in his debut as the full-time starter in Aggieland. Reed had four touchdown passes and compiled over 300 all-purpose yards between his passing and rushing. Another strong showing from Reed in this game could get the hype train into gear just a couple of weeks before SEC play begins.
