Many England managers have struggled with the demands of the role, but Thomas Tuchel appears to be managing effectively. Although his results as the Three Lions’ coach have been mixed, Tuchel’s recent comments indicate his enthusiasm for shaping the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Before England’s final two qualifiers against Serbia and Albania, Tuchel expressed openness to remaining in his position post-2026 World Cup. The former Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain manager mentioned that a contract extension is a “possibility,” suggesting he could stay longer than initially planned.
Tuchel has accomplished the first part of his task as England’s manager by securing a spot for the Three Lions in the 2026 World Cup with two qualifiers remaining. The next challenge will be more difficult. Having reached two Euro finals under Gareth Southgate, England appointed Tuchel to help them win the World Cup for the first time since 1966.
However, winning the World Cup may not be the only standard for Tuchel’s success as England manager. At 52, he must demonstrate a clear vision for The Three Lions before The FA decides to extend his contract beyond the 2026 World Cup. So far, Tuchel has not fully shown this.
The 5-0 victory over Serbia was a significant result and performance by Tuchel’s England, showcasing the blueprint for the national team under his guidance. England exhibited energy and intensity in Belgrade, effectively utilizing their attacking talents while maintaining control on the field.
In other games, however, Tuchel’s England has appeared lackluster, without a clear game plan, and struggled in matches where their talent should have resulted in easier victories. England has taken time to adjust under their new manager.
Tuchel is still refining the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, focusing on the midfield by introducing Elliot Anderson to provide needed energy and cohesion. The Nottingham Forest player is improving and has been compared to Steven Gerrard.
The midfield focus also includes Jude Bellingham, who was left out of Tuchel’s October international squad. Tuchel sent a clear message that Bellingham needs to elevate his performance levels, as he has struggled to find his best form for both club and country recently.
Tuchel has experimented with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon on the left wing, with Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Morgan Rogers also given chances. This process continued with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott selected for the Serbia and Albania matches.
Tuchel may enjoy reshaping England in his image, but a poor showing at the 2026 World Cup could end his hopes for an extended tenure. “I know from my experience in club football what brings out the best in me,” he said. “I feel revitalized and love working with the players, staying close to the Premier League.”
Under Southgate, England made significant progress as a competitive force internationally. Tuchel’s appointment aims to elevate The Three Lions further, but so far, this hasn’t been achieved. Tuchel relies on his process to deliver results at the World Cup and potentially beyond.
