Trinity Rodman, a star forward for the US national team, has signed a new three-year contract with the Washington Spirit, making her reportedly the highest-paid female player globally. The deal, announced Thursday, resolves months of speculation about the 23-year-old’s career. Her previous $1.1 million, four-year contract expired in December, and she had received lucrative offers from Europe that the Spirit initially couldn’t match due to NWSL salary cap restrictions.
The new contract, which extends through the 2028 season, follows the NWSL’s introduction of a “High Impact Player Rule.” This rule allows clubs to exceed the salary cap by up to $1 million if the player satisfies certain star criteria, such as ranking in the top 40 of the Guardian’s Top 100 women footballers or finishing in the top 30 in the Ballon d’Or over the past two years.
Rodman’s retention was deemed vital to the NWSL, especially after notable league stars like Naomi Girma and Alyssa Thompson moved to Chelsea, and Sam Coffey transferred to Manchester City. Spirit owner Michele Kang, speaking at a Los Angeles press conference, expressed gratitude that Rodman chose to stay despite other attractive offers.
Olympic gold medalist Rodman, who donned a jacket and tie to sign her contract alongside Kang, has spent her entire professional career with the Spirit. Drafted by the club in 2021, she has since helped them secure a championship and make two finals appearances.
