Transfers like Spurs signing Klinsmann or selling Waddle were once shocking. Today, transfer influencers track private jets, leaving little unknown.
Which transfer fee stunned you? For many, it was Spurs buying Gazza for £2m in 1988. TWO MILLION. It seemed an astronomical amount. The next year, I recall rushing to the living room—Spurs had signed Gary Lineker. Imagining the upcoming season, I pictured: “Gascoigne, to Waddle, in for LINEKERRRR.” Suddenly, the TV announced Spurs sold Waddle to Marseille. I was devastated. It came without warning for me, and apparently Lineker too.
I recently heard the striker discuss the transfer on the What Did You Do Yesterday? podcast with David O’Doherty and Max Rushden (arguably his second-best podcast).
