Timo Werner, the German striker, is reportedly in discussions with the New York Red Bulls for a potential transfer to Major League Soccer, according to a source connected with amNewYork. Fabrizio Romano first reported that negotiations are in progress regarding the terms of the deal, salary, and other details.
Earlier discussions between Werner and New York took place in February, but no agreement was reached. At that time, Werner was on loan from RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga team to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. His 18-month loan stint at Tottenham ended with just 41 appearances and three goals, and he was omitted from the Europa League roster despite the team’s injury woes. He watched from the sidelines as Tottenham won the final against Manchester United.
A return to Leipzig, where he is contracted until next summer, is unlikely due to his recent difficulties on the field. Werner previously enjoyed success at Leipzig, scoring 34 goals in the 2019-20 season and earning a spot on the German national team, for which he has 57 caps. However, his transfer to Chelsea was less fruitful, despite being part of the 2021 UEFA Champions League-winning squad. After two seasons in London, he returned to Leipzig and was later loaned to Tottenham during the 2023-24 season.
Moving to New York might offer Werner a chance to stabilize his career and regain confidence in a less competitive league like MLS. He could reunite with former Leipzig teammate Emil Forsberg and form a formidable partnership with ex-Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, under the guidance of head coach Sandro Schwarz.
