QUEENS, NY — The New York Mets may receive crucial reinforcements for their lineup this week. Starling Marte, out with a bruised right knee on the 10-day injured list, could rejoin the team by Wednesday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Angels or during the upcoming road series against the San Francisco Giants, according to manager Carlos Mendoza before Monday’s game against the Angels at Citi Field. “He’s getting close,” Mendoza stated. Mendoza noted that Marte has been running at 90% and has been running bases and hitting against the machine. “Hopefully, a couple of days,” Mendoza added. “And I’m not sure about maybe the last day here or maybe in San Francisco, but he’s getting close.” Mendoza does not expect Marte to have a rehab assignment. Marte was placed on the injured list on July 7 and missed nine games, with the Mets going 4-5 in that period. In 58 games this season, the 36-year-old has a .270/.353/.387 slash line with a .740 OPS, 44 hits, and four home runs in 163 at-bats. Reliever José Butto, on the 15-day injured list due to illness, will pitch Wednesday, as confirmed by Mendoza. It’s undecided whether it will be with Triple-A or in Queens. Butto has played in 31 games and pitched 43.2 innings in 2025, with a 2.47 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. He went on the injured list before the Subway Series on July 4 and missed 15 games. Butto’s return will bolster an overworked Mets bullpen, heavily relied upon due to blows to the starting rotation, with Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, Tylor Megill, and Griffin Canning missing significant time. In the last 35 games, David Peterson is the only starter to pitch six innings or more, achieving this five times. “That’s kind of like day to day,” Mendoza said about Butto’s status. “Pitched yesterday, feels good today.
