Or perhaps it was when West Ham scored first against Manchester United 10 days later. Ultimately, West Ham did not win either match; otherwise, they would have had five more points, tying with Tottenham going into this weekend. Then, Tottenham’s closeness to relegation would have been undeniable.
West Ham’s resurgence means this isn’t like last season when a victory at Ipswich in February took Tottenham to 33 points, effectively securing their Premier League status and allowing Ange Postecoglou to focus on Europe. If Spurs manage the highly improbable and beat Arsenal on Sunday, they would reach 32 points, and despite their fans’ joy, nobody would feel safe.
