Justin Haak enters free agency at an ideal time following a stellar 2025 season that has propelled NYCFC to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The 24-year-old central defender, set to become a free agent once NYCFC’s season ends, has attracted substantial interest from other MLS teams and clubs in England and Germany, according to a source.
A total of 16 MLS teams have shown interest in Haak, though returning to NYCFC could still be possible due to his strong connection with first-year head coach Pascal Jansen.
Six teams from England’s Football League Championship have displayed notable interest, including first-place Coventry City and second-place Middlesbrough. These teams are in contention for promotion to the Premier League.
Coventry City’s manager, Frank Lampard, has connections to NYCFC, having ended his playing career there in 2016.
Interest also comes from Germany’s Bundesliga, with two mid-table teams expressing interest.
This situation presents NYCFC with the challenge of potentially losing one of its top homegrown talents, Brooklyn native Haak, in free agency without compensation. The New York Red Bulls faced a similar situation, selling John Tolkin to Holstein Kiel for $3 million before the season began.
Haak has emerged as one of the league’s leading defenders, capable of playing central midfield, which adds to his global appeal.
He played in 35 matches this season, scoring one goal. Haak was one of only 10 MLS players to log over 3,000 minutes and ranked 16th with 1,747 completed passes, positioning him as a candidate for MLS Best XI honors.
NYCFC faces Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference semifinal on Sunday at 7:45 p.m. ET in Chester, PA.
