Arsenal are in need of a new centre forward. Observers of their lackluster 2024/25 season in both the Premier League and Champions League, including Mikel Arteta, recognize the gap in their offensive line. A new striker is anticipated at the Emirates this summer.
Numerous players have been speculated as potential recruits. Ivan Toney was a candidate 18 months ago before joining Saudi Arabia from Brentford. Alexander Isak was considered ideal, yet Newcastle United’s dependence on him makes this unlikely.
Recent news indicates Arsenal have focused their search on Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, with a leaning towards Sesko. The club has initiated talks with the Slovenian striker, who has shown potential at RB Leipzig over two seasons.
While Sesko would bolster Arsenal, at 22, he may not be the instant impact fans desire. He matches the team’s youthful profile but would be another developmental project for Arteta.
Sesko boasts evident attributes: standing at 6ft 5″, he combines physical presence with impressive speed and powerful shooting. His ability to exploit space behind defenses would add a new facet to Arsenal’s attack.
However, Sesko doesn’t possess the penalty box instinct Arsenal has missed at times. There’s no assurance he will capitalize on the chances that previously eluded the Gunners in key competitions.
Sesko’s talent is unrefined; he was benched by RB Leipzig late last season. His 13 goals in 33 games were commendable, yet seven players, including Harry Kane and Serhou Guirassy, outscored him. His transfer could cost up to £60m.
Arsenal’s interest extends to left wingers, which may be a more straightforward way to enhance their frontline. Nico Williams is a potential upgrade over Gabriel Martinelli, who has struggled in crucial matches.
Rodrygo could also be an option for Arsenal. With Kylian Mbappe’s arrival at Real Madrid, Rodrygo has been sidelined and might be available. Although he mostly plays on the right at Madrid, this is due to Vinicius Junior and Mbappe occupying the left side.
Despite criticism as Arsenal’s main striker, Havertz scored only four goals less than Sesko, despite missing 10 games through injury. While not a natural striker like Haaland or Isak, Havertz contributes significantly in pressing and possession.
Arsenal, under Arteta, are at a pivotal stage. Expectations were high for a major step forward last season, yet they plateaued. The right striker is crucial for progress, and Sesko could be that player, though he may need time to develop into Arsenal’s required striker.
