Yes, it has happened, Ken. Robin Horton recalls a cold January in 1980 when Stoke City faced Burnley in the FA Cup third round. “Stoke’s Denis Smith, already on a yellow card, limped towards the touchline with an injured ankle, only to delay as substitute Paul Johnson wasn’t properly warmed up,” Robin recounts. “Referee Kevin McNally then sent Smith off for time-wasting. McNally wasn’t popular with Stoke; Burnley won the match via a penalty, and Stoke’s Ray Evans was also sent off for what manager Alan Durban described as ‘heavy sarcasm’,” which is quite an unusual reason for dismissal.
