As the weight lifted at Anfield and Liverpool entered stoppage time in their first Premier League victory since September 20, the Kop erupted with chants of Arne Slot’s name. It’s easy to support your manager with victory in sight. Notably, fans sang at nil-nil, when pressure was high and Dominik Szoboszlai had just missed a chance to capitalize on Aston Villa’s poor defending, which ultimately led to their defeat. Support for Slot was steadfast when it counted.
Liverpool, previously seen as the Premier League’s crisis club before the match after losing six out of seven games, now stands third in the league with a well-earned win against Villa. Recording their first clean sheet in 11 games showed a controlled performance from the champions and, as Slot admitted, a stroke of luck. Unai Emery’s team hit the post twice when the match was finely balanced but proved to be the ideal opponents for a team and manager in need of a boost.
