Whatever Lee Carsley achieves in his coaching career, this will be tough to surpass. England’s Under-21s were pulled back by Germany after leading 2-0 with goals from Harvey Elliott and Omari Hutchinson. Those with a negative mindset might have recalled the 1970 World Cup when Sir Alf Ramsey’s team, the reigning champions, were knocked out after extra time in a similar situation.
However, with Thomas Tuchel observing from the stands after crossing the Atlantic, Carsley – who wasn’t born then – had no such worries. He took the bold step of removing Elliott and captain James McAtee, and substitute Jonathan Rowe scored almost immediately. This victory means England has repeated Dave Sexton’s past success by winning consecutive European titles, marking their fourth overall. Based on this performance, the future appears very promising.
