In 2019, Rose Lavelle secured the World Cup for the US with a pivotal goal. Now, after six years, three club changes, and close to 100 national team appearances, she has claimed her first NWSL title in similar fashion.
Lavelle was the key player for Gotham FC in a tense championship match on Saturday, seizing a rare scoring opportunity and sending her shot into the far corner, leading to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit. Her goal was one of the few moments of clear offensive action in a game marked by the rivalry between two of the league’s toughest teams, with Gotham taking advantage during a lapse from Spirit manager Adrián González.
