As the New York Mets completed their sweep of the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, their depth shined once more. Francisco Alvarez delivered two hits to boost his strong return from Triple-A Syracuse, and Starling Marte contributed with his own pair of hits. The standout performer was third baseman Ronny Mauricio.
Mauricio recorded his first career four-hit game on Sunday, with a single, two doubles, and a homer into McCovey Cove. He also drove in two runs in the win. Switching between second and third base, his bat has heated up after a slow start with the Mets in 2025. Over the past 15 games, he is batting .295 with two homers, three RBIs, and an .890 OPS.
His resurgence coincides with the buzz around the Trade Deadline on Thursday, and the Mets might need to address an infield logjam for team improvement. Alongside Mauricio, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos have each made contributions, putting the Mets in an intriguing spot with the deadline on the horizon.
Despite a slow start to his Major League career, Baty has emerged as a regular contributor in 2025. The third baseman holds a .235 batting average, .710 OPS, 11 homers, and 33 RBIs. Though the full-season numbers may not stand out, his bat has been steady over the last 30 games, with a .264 average, .751 OPS, three homers, and nine RBIs, while providing solid defense at the hot corner all season.
Vientos, however, has faced challenges this year despite a breakout 2024. After missing time due to a hamstring injury, he maintains a .226 average, .638 OPS, six homers, and 27 RBIs in 73 games. His arm stays strong, yet his defensive output hasn’t matched Baty’s level, with seven errors compared to Baty’s four.
Despite Vientos’ down year, his 2024 performance showed he could be part of the team’s future plans, with 27 homers and 71 RBIs totaling an .837 OPS. His on-base numbers are gradually improving, boasting a six-game hitting streak entering Monday’s series opener against the San Diego Padres, including two doubles.
However, his last homer was on May 11, and reviving his home run power is crucial for success. If he fails to find that form, he might become part of a package for a starting pitcher or centerfielder as the team looks to upgrade before Thursday’s deadline. One of Baty or Mauricio could also be included in a potential deal, but nothing has materialized as of Monday.
Whatever the outcome, the Mets face a good problem. Although Vientos hasn’t recaptured his 2024 form, Baty and Mauricio have shone in various ways. The Mets have provided all three players a chance in the spotlight, but with the trade deadline approaching, the decision becomes tougher as Mauricio continues to impress against his fellow infielders.
