After an 18-month hiatus from the field, New York Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio is nearing the end of his long road to recovery—but his future with the team is soon to be decided.
Wednesday marked the 11th day of Mauricio’s rehabilitation assignment, which, according to league rules, can last a maximum of 20 days. That gives the team until Friday, May 16, to determine where the 24-year-old will begin the 2025 season—provided he remains healthy through the remainder of his rehab.
Mauricio has been battling back from a torn ACL suffered during winter ball in December 2023. His journey was further complicated by a second surgery eight months after the initial procedure, required to remove scar tissue from his right knee. The setback sidelined him for the entire 2024 season.
Though he hasn’t played in a major league game since the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, Mauricio remains on the Mets’ 40-man roster. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza addressed the looming roster decision, saying, “We have a decision to make. So we’ll see. Gotta get there first. Hopefully, he continues to feel the way he’s feeling, and we’ll see what we got.”
Mauricio has shown some signs of rust—understandable given his lengthy absence. He hit .133 with a .329 OPS over 15 at-bats with Single-A St. Lucie but went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base on Tuesday.
Following that game, Mauricio was promoted to Double-A Binghamton, where he is scheduled to make his debut on Friday. The Mets plan to continue using him across second base, shortstop, and third base—a reflection of the organization’s value on player versatility under the leadership of president of baseball operations David Stearns.
Given the time it took for Mauricio to return to the field and with no urgent need to rush him back—especially with Luisangel Acuña currently handling utility infield duties effectively—the most logical move appears to be optioning Mauricio to the minors. Triple-A Syracuse would likely be the landing spot, allowing him to increase his workload and prepare for a potential role with the major league club later this season.
