The New York Red Bulls are still assessing the future of Felipe Carballo with the team, despite his loan ending in a week, according to a source familiar with the situation. Carballo was loaned from Brazilian club Gremio to New York shortly before the MLS transfer window closed last August, with the agreement lasting until June 30.
The 28-year-old Uruguayan midfielder has faced injuries during the first half of the 2025 season, most recently an abdominal issue that sidelined him for a month. He returned in the Red Bulls’ 2-1 defeat to Austin on June 14.
A quieter June schedule, due to international breaks and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup hosted by the United States, has limited Carballo’s chances to make an impact. The Red Bulls haven’t played since the June 14 match against Austin and have only two games remaining—Wednesday in Toronto and Saturday at home against Minnesota—before Carballo’s loan concludes.
Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz mentioned, “We are having open conversations with me and Felipe. We are trying everything, and then we’ll receive the result at the end of the month. It’s a clear and really good conversation.”
Playing primarily as a holding midfielder, Carballo has not scored a regular-season goal with the MLS team. However, he did score twice during the run to an Eastern Conference title last season, once against the Columbus Crew in the first round and again in the conference semifinals against NYCFC at Citi Field.
There is speculation from South America suggesting Gremio plans to loan Carballo out again upon his return. Potential interested clubs include Brazilian Serie B’s Atletico Paranaense and Uruguay’s Nacional, where Carballo played between 2015 and 2022.
