Breakdancing has transformed into a global sensation, with its evolution reaching a historic milestone: its debut at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games. Despite the sport’s international acclaim, it remains intrinsically tied to its birthplace—New York City.
On May 9, some of the world’s best breakdancers gathered in Manhattan for the Red Bull BC One New York Cypher, hosted at Racket NYC in Chelsea. This stop marked the second leg of Red Bull BC One’s U.S. tour and served as a lead-up to the National Final scheduled for Denver, Colorado.
For the past 20 years, Red Bull has played a pivotal role in spotlighting breakdancing globally, emerging as a premier platform for the sport. And while breaking now thrives worldwide, celebrating the art form where hip hop culture began adds a special intensity to the competition.
B-Boy Prevail, a local breaker and co-host of the event, expressed his pride in New York’s legacy: “One of the beautiful things you get out of Red Bull BC One New York is that it’s the Mecca. You get to see it from the birthplace, you feel that energy because it was created here. I love New York because it’s a melting pot—it brings everything together. Diversity, beauty, it all mixes into breaking. This is where it’s at.”
A sold-out crowd packed the venue to watch 104 competitors go head-to-head in both B-Boy and B-Girl divisions. Alongside the high-energy battles, concertgoers were treated to a live performance by Queens rapper Rome Streetz.
Judging the event was Victor Montalvo—also known as B-Boy Victor—a two-time Red Bull BC One World Champion and the first American breaker to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games, where he later earned a bronze medal. Speaking about New York’s breakdancing culture, Montalvo noted, “It comes from here. There’s a raw energy in the dance and in the dancers themselves. Their hunger is something incredible to witness.”
That hunger translated into victory for two New York natives and first-time Red Bull BC One competitors. B-Boy Break and B-Girl Krazy took top honors in their respective categories, earning a trip to Denver for the National Final. Runners-up B-Boy Gravity and B-Girl Nikki also secured spots in the next phase of the competition.
“This was my first Red Bull BC One,” said B-Boy Break. “I was definitely nervous, but I’m proud of how I performed and followed the rhythm. I’m excited for Denver, but the mission isn’t over yet.”
B-Girl Krazy shared a similar sentiment: “It felt so amazing to compete. I’ve watched Red Bull BC One since I was young, training for this moment. My time came—and I won!”
The Red Bull BC One USA National Final will take place May 16–18 and will be livestreamed on the Red Bull BC One YouTube and Facebook pages, giving fans a front-row seat as the journey to the top continues.
