ELMONT, NY — New York Rangers star winger Artemi Panarin is being sidelined starting with Wednesday’s game against the Islanders until general manager Chris Drury can execute a trade.
The Rangers are initiating a substantial roster sale ahead of the NHL’s March 6 trade deadline, beginning Monday night by trading defenseman Carson Soucy to the Islanders for a third-round draft pick.
Panarin, a pending free agent, was informed by Drury that the Rangers won’t pursue a contract extension. Subsequently, the GM issued a letter to fans indicating a forthcoming “re-tool.”
“I’m not sure how I feel,” Panarin said on Jan. 17. “I’m still confused, but the GM made a decision to go another way. I’m OK with that.”
At 34 years old, Panarin is among the most sought-after trade targets this season. He has 19 goals and 38 assists, totaling 57 points, in 52 games.
Interest is expected to be high as many teams are watching the Rangers’ roster changes. Sixteen scouts attended Wednesday’s rivalry game at UBS Arena between the New York teams.
