The Los Angeles Rams are facing challenges early as the 2025 NFL season approaches, with star quarterback Matthew Stafford experiencing back issues during training camp.
According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, Stafford will miss practice next week due to back soreness.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, dealing with back soreness, will not return to practice next week as planned, coach Sean McVay reported on Saturday.
Last week, McVay mentioned that although Stafford, 37, would have limited participation at the start of training camp, he is “absolutely” expected to be ready for the regular season. Once Stafford resumes practice, the Rams plan to maintain a modified schedule for him and several other veteran offensive players.
With Stafford at 37 entering his 17th NFL season, the Rams’ cautious approach during training camp is sensible, as it minimizes risk for seasoned veterans.
Rams head coach Sean McVay commented on Stafford’s ongoing status.
“I don’t think we can be smart enough with somebody like Matthew, and I think it’s best for him, best for our football team, and that’s kind of the plan that we’ll have moving forward,” McVay stated.
The Rams aren’t panicking yet, with over a month before Week 1 of the 2025 season against the Houston Texans at SoFi Stadium. Still, persistent back soreness could become a concern if it continues four to five weeks from now.
