US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to authorize a bold mission targeting Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro has fueled speculation that Greenland might be his next focus. Polymarket indicates an 8% probability of a Greenland invasion occurring in 2026, with over $165,000 in market volume so far.
Trump has highlighted Greenland’s strategic significance in the Arctic. On Tuesday, the White House declared the island a “national security priority,” indicating that military action could be considered to secure Greenland.
Denmark remains firmly opposed to any talks of a takeover. Following the White House’s comments, six major European countries issued a joint statement defending Greenland’s sovereignty. Leaders from Denmark, Spain, Poland, Germany, Italy, France, and the UK emphasized that only Denmark and Greenland have the authority to decide their relations.
The White House is also considering alternative approaches, such as purchasing the territory from Denmark or forming a compact of free association, similar to the arrangement with the Marshall Islands.
