The Houston Astros, fresh from a 1-0 win in the opening game, aim to maintain their momentum as they host the Philadelphia Phillies for the second game of this interleague series at Daikin Park on Wednesday, June 25, with the first pitch at 8:10pm ET.
Colton Gordon (2-1, 4.54 ERA) will pitch for the Astros, who are looking to clinch the series against a fellow division leader. The Phillies, having performed well on the mound in the first game, will start their ace, Zack Wheeler (7-2, 2.61 ERA), as they attempt to tie the series. Both teams face significant injuries, with Bryce Harper, Yordan Alvarez, and Chas McCormick absent tonight, as well as a long list of sidelined Houston pitchers. Check out all the odds for tonight’s matchup and my game picks below.
Astros vs Phillies Picks & Predictions
- Best bet: Under 7.5 runs (-115 at BetMGM)
I favor the under (7.5) for two main reasons: the significant injuries on both sides and the pitchers on the mound. The Astros rank in the lower half of the league in runs scored per game and, beyond Christian Walker, have struggled against Zack Wheeler.
While the Phillies lineup against lefties might manage to hit Colton Gordon, I doubt Houston will keep their 26-year-old in for too long if he’s getting hit hard. Gordon has exceeded five innings in only two of his seven starts this season. The quicker the Astros switch to their bullpen, the better this bet looks, as Houston’s relievers boast a 3.26 ERA, second best in MLB.
Additionally, Daikin Park isn’t the most hitter-friendly field, with average run and home run production. The over has hit in just 3 of the Astros’ last 10 home games, and only in 16 of their 41 home games this season (39%). For the Phillies, the over has hit in only 3 of their last 10 road games.
If you’re interested in a same-game parlay, here’s my bet on bet365, using a 30% MLB SGP boost:
SGP Picks
- Zach Wheeler 6+ Ks
- Phillies Moneyline
- Trea Turner 1+ Hits
This SGP is +140 odds before the 30% boost.
Wheeler has recorded at least six strikeouts in 14 of 15 starts this season, including 9 Ks against the Blue Jays and 7 and 8 Ks in two games against the Nationals. Though the Astros don’t strike out much, they do more than those teams. Without Alvarez in their lineup, I expect Wheeler to achieve six or more Ks tonight.
I like the Phillies moneyline in this SGP, as I believe they’ll capitalize on facing a left-handed pitcher tonight. I expect Wheeler to go deep into this game and hand over to his bullpen with a lead.
Building on the prediction of a Phillies win, Trea Turner has excelled against LHP this season, with a .306 average in 98 ABs. I anticipate he’ll have at least two ABs against lefty Gordon tonight.
Houston Astros vs Philadelphia Phillies Odds
At the time of writing, the Phillies were -161 favorites on the moneyline and +110 to cover the -1.5 run line. The moneyline odds suggest a 59.2% chance for the Phillies to win tonight. The game’s total was set at 7.5 upon publishing. Odds will continue to update before the game starts, ensuring you get the best price on your bets.
