Pep Guardiola’s assistant sought Klopp’s approval
Lijnders: ‘Jurgen said he’d take the job if I didn’t’
Pep Lijnders revealed that Jürgen Klopp encouraged him to accept the position as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, despite Klopp’s long tenure at Liverpool. Lijnders mentioned that Klopp jokingly said he would take the role if Lijnders refused.
Lijnders joined Guardiola’s coaching team in the summer and will be with him, who was absent from Friday’s press conference for “personal reasons”, at the Tottenham match on Sunday. Lijnders spent nearly ten years at Liverpool, mainly alongside Klopp, and faced City in three title races, finishing as runners-up twice. This led to some reflection for Lijnders when he considered moving to Manchester.
