PAGCOR to Pre-Screen Gambling Ads Prior to Launch - SCCG Management

PAGCOR, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp, and the country’s media regulator, the Ad Standards Council (ASC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday to pre-screen all gambling-related advertisements across media platforms.

The collaboration aims to protect vulnerable consumers by improving advertising standards and shielding citizens from harm. Initially, PAGCOR planned to take its time regarding gambling ads, but the regulator quickly changed its stance.

“Almost a year ago, we began initial talks about this initiative. Today, we are gathered here to formally sign this agreement so that we can immediately execute everything we committed to in this memorandum of understanding,” said Alejandro Tengco, PAGCOR’s chief executive, who initially said the regulator wouldn’t act immediately but later reconsidered.

Stricter ad regulations for the gambling sector are being introduced in the Philippines. ASC chairperson Golda Roldan stated this is a logical step for market development and essential for protecting consumers from gambling-related harm.

“We stand with PAGCOR in our shared goal of protecting the Filipino people, especially in sectors like gambling where communication requires greater sensitivity and care,” she added. The Philippines has seen numerous regulatory proposals, from potential online gambling bans to restrictions on e-wallet use for gambling and advertising.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr reviewed a call for a complete ban on online gambling. However, it seems unlikely he will pursue this measure due to the financial impact on the Philippines.

Earlier this month, the Philippines ordered the removal of all gambling-related billboards and advertisements from public spaces to reduce exposure to gambling.
