Online sports betting is affecting individuals in Ontario, Canada, according to Bill Marra, CEO of Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare in Windsor. Marra notes that the swift rise in online betting has led many into gambling debts and related issues.
Healthcare Professional Calls for Action Against Excessive Gambling
Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare offers a program for gambling-related issues, making Marra well-positioned to discuss the effects of excessive gambling on individuals and society. “It is very difficult for anyone that’s monitoring a sporting event, reading something online, or watching it live to not be exposed to online gambling enticements,” Marra explained, highlighting the industry’s aggressive marketing tactics.
Marra warned that a more balanced approach is needed to protect people. Exposure is often linked to a higher risk of developing problems, especially for those already vulnerable. Marra is not alone in his concerns; numerous Canadian senators have urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to seek new methods to moderate excessive gambling advertising and safeguard consumers.
Canada faces additional challenges with the rise of online gambling scams targeting vulnerable consumers, often under the guise of legitimate operations. Marra attributes part of the problem to the prevalence of gambling advertising. In his open letter to the media, government, and regulators, he reiterated: “It is very difficult for anyone that’s monitoring a sporting event, reading something online, or watching it live to not be exposed to online gambling enticements.”
Banning Gambling Altogether Is Impractical
Marra acknowledged that while eliminating online gambling is unrealistic, there are measures to better protect consumers. Charlottetown Sen. Percy Downe has urged for stricter actions, suggesting that Canada could follow the example of countries like Belgium and Italy, where broad bans on gambling advertisements have been successfully implemented.
