ONDREJ PALAT MAKES IMPRESSIVE ISLANDERS DEBUT WITH GOAL
ELMONT, NY — Debuts are often pressure-filled, but Ondrej Palat seemed unaffected as he made a remarkable start with the New York Islanders. Acquired from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, Palat scored a goal and had two points in a commanding 5-2 victory over the Rangers on Wednesday.
In one appearance for the Islanders, Palat already achieved 20% of his previous season’s production with the Devils, where he recorded four goals and six assists in 51 games. “I’m not judging my game off scoring or points,” Palat shared. “I just want to help the team win and play a two-way game.”
Indeed, Palat excelled, contributing two hits, a blocked shot, an assist on Emil Heineman’s 15th goal of the season, and netting the opening goal 14:59 into the first period.
Coach Patrick Roy praised Palat’s relentless play, noting his constant movement and shot-blocking. The 34-year-old found the Islanders’ system familiar, reminiscent of his ten-year stint with the Lightning, which included two Stanley Cup victories.
“The system is pretty easy, but there’s still room for improvement,” Palat admitted. “As I play more games, I’ll get more comfortable. But for a first game, we played well.”
