Etihad Park, the new stadium for NYCFC set to open next year, has been chosen as a host venue for the 2028 Summer Olympic soccer tournaments, the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games committee announced on Tuesday.
Situated next to Citi Field at Willets Point in Queens, this soccer-specific stadium will accommodate group-stage and knockout matches for both men’s and women’s competitions, leading up to the gold-medal matches on July 28-29 at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.
Other host locations include Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose, and San Diego. Match assignments and schedules are expected to be disclosed in April.
“Hosting Olympic Football group stage and knockout matches in stadiums across the United States allows more fans to witness this global event and experience the Olympic spirit firsthand,” stated Shana Ferguson, LA28’s chief of port and games delivery officer.
The Summer Olympics mark a significant inaugural benchmark event for NYCFC’s new stadium, which will have a capacity of approximately 25,000 spectators within its modern facilities. The 2026 MLS season will be the last year that the club plays home games at Yankee Stadium, which has been their venue since 2015.
This Olympic Games will feature more women’s teams (16) than men’s (12) for the first time. The women’s tournament will showcase the sport’s top professionals, while the men’s tournament is a U-23 competition, with each team allowed three players over the age of 23.
The United States has automatically qualified for the tournament as the host nation.
