New York’s Attorney General Letitia James spearheaded a significant effort against 26 online platforms involved in what is deemed illegal gambling through sweepstakes casinos. These platforms, which allowed users to purchase virtual coins to participate in casino-style games with an opportunity to win cash, have ceased operations in the state.
The initiative, in coordination with the New York State Gaming Commission, revealed that these sites violated the law by enabling gambling with virtual currency for real money or prizes. New York law classifies any game offering valuable rewards, including digital tokens, as gambling, necessitating oversight. However, these sweepstakes platforms operated unchecked, raising concerns about game fairness, data security, and player protection.
Attorney General James emphasized the financial and psychological dangers these platforms posed, citing the lack of regulation and oversight as potential catalysts for addiction, underage participation, and scams. Following cease-and-desist orders, all 26 websites agreed to halt the sale of sweepstakes coins in New York.
Support for the crackdown came from State Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer, who criticized the sweepstakes casinos as deceptive and beyond the bounds of legal gambling. He advocated for New Yorkers to engage with licensed gambling operators to ensure safety and fairness.
Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., a longstanding advocate for responsible gambling laws, expressed concern about the exploitation of vulnerable groups, especially youth, due to the minimal barriers to entry on these platforms. He highlighted the appeal of these sites to casual users unaware of the risks.
The crackdown targeted several prominent sweepstakes gaming websites, including Chumba, Global Poker, Fortune Coins, and Luckyland. These sites offered free play through bonus tokens but encouraged users to purchase more virtual coins for exchangeable prizes, mimicking traditional gambling setups.
Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, head of the legislative committee overseeing gambling regulations, noted the sweepstakes model’s influence on risky gambling behaviors among teenagers. She praised the Attorney General’s efforts to foster a safer online gaming environment.
