As Ohio deliberates on the legalization of online casinos and the introduction of video lottery terminals to bars and restaurants, a Michigan woman’s experience highlights the risks associated with the added ease of gambling via mobile devices.
“Wow, Online Gambling. I’ll Give It a Try.”
The woman, in an interview with News 5, recounted the downfall of her construction business and family life after losing $2 million over six months in online blackjack.
She explained, “Our construction costs surged due to COVID-19, and while managing multiple projects, I decided to try online gambling, hoping it would help.”
What started with a $1,000 bet and a bonus quickly spiraled out of control. “In six months, I lost $2 million — our home, my business, cars, retirement.”
“You Can Do It In the Bathroom”
The woman, choosing anonymity, emphasized the constant accessibility of online gambling, making it challenging to stop.
She remarked, “You can gamble anywhere, even in the bathroom. Unlike occasional visits to physical casinos, this proved overwhelming.”
Some casinos halted her access, while others lured her back with money. “Missing days meant receiving thousands to continue,” she shared.
Her gambling halted when her husband discovered unpaid bills.

Michigan’s launch of online casinos in 2021, followed by states like Pennsylvania and West Virginia, highlights a regional trend.
Problem gambling is on the rise. Tamera Hunter from Kent’s Townhall II noted a 25-30% uptick in addiction screenings since sports betting became legal in Ohio, resulting in more significant losses.
“There’s a growing need for support,” Hunter stated. Derek Longmeier from the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio highlighted the unique risk: “It’s accessible 24/7.”
Longmeier questioned if tax benefits outweigh social costs: “Where’s the money coming from? Families feel the impact more than entertainment industries.”
In July, Ohio will host the National Conference on Gambling Addiction, focusing on economic benefits versus citizen protection.
