Trade rumors have surrounded Mark Vientos from the summer into the offseason. The New York Mets’ infielder/designated hitter, who recently switched agents to sign with Scott Boras, appears to be losing playing time in New York after a disappointing 2025, following a breakout campaign during the Mets’ run to the NLCS. Brett Baty seems to have secured the starting job at third base, and the Mets signed veteran infielder Jorge Polanco as a first baseman and designated hitter. Unless David Stearns and Carlos Mendoza decide to platoon Vientos with Polanco — with Jeff McNeil considered more of a first base option than Vientos — the 26-year-old is expendable. Despite a low slashline of .233/.289/.413 (.702 OPS), the Mets should be able to include him in a package for much-needed pitching help. He won’t be a headliner, but a younger talent two years removed from a 27-home-run season could enhance a deal. Reports indicate the Mets have talked with the San Diego Padres recently, mentioning names like starting pitcher Nick Pivetta and closer Mason Miller. One of New York’s top pitching prospects, Jonah Tong, could be part of the return to San Diego. New York’s starting rotation and bullpen are becoming thin. Nolan McLean and Clay Holmes are the only reliable options after Kodai Senga’s mechanics faltered from a hamstring injury, Sean Manaea couldn’t regain form after a lat injury, and David Peterson struggled after a strong first half. The bullpen lost closer Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving new signing Devin Williams and left-handers Brooks Raley and AJ Minter as the only other reliable options.
