New York Mets infielder Luisangel Acuna is facing limited playing time opportunities. The 23-year-old has had only eight at-bats since June 1, as Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio have been favored in the infield rotation, both excelling against right-handed pitchers. Acuna has managed just one hit in these at-bats, contributing to a decline in his batting average from .313 on May 4 to .244. In his recent appearances, he has a .145 average with no home runs, two RBIs, and three stolen bases over 27 games.
Manager Carlos Mendoza, however, is optimistic about providing Acuna with more playing time instead of a demotion to Triple-A Syracuse, citing his potential and past success, including winning National League Rookie of the Month in April with a .288 average and seven stolen bases. Mendoza hinted at Acuna’s potential start against a left-handed pitcher in the upcoming game against the Washington Nationals and pitcher MacKenzie Gore. Mendoza emphasized balancing team needs with Acuna’s development, stating, “He continues to help us win baseball games here.”
Meanwhile, Baty has claimed the third-base role after a strong May, following Mark Vientos’ injury. Mauricio has also impressed with a home run in Colorado, bouncing back from knee surgery.
