Japan’s baseball star Munetaka Murakami remains unsigned as the MLB deadline approaches. The 25-year-old has until Monday at 5 p.m. ET to sign with an MLB team, following his posting last month by the Yakult Swallows. If he doesn’t secure a deal, he’ll return to Japan for the 2026 season.
Murakami’s offensive skills are impressive, with a record 56 home runs in NPB in 2022, but concerns persist. MLB sees him as a first baseman rather than his natural third base position, and he’s considered a defensive risk. His high strikeout rate, nearly 30% in Japan, and struggles with pitches over 93 mph are noteworthy issues.
Despite these challenges, experts like Yakyu Cosmopolitan see potential for Murakami to adapt and become a top player, possibly achieving a .900+ OPS and 50+ home runs in a season, akin to players like Rafael Devers or Matt Olson. However, an adjustment period is anticipated.
The Mets’ interest has waned over the offseason, especially after losing Pete Alonso to the Orioles and signing Jorge Polanco. Yet, Mets president David Stearns has scouted Murakami in Japan, leaving the door open if his signing price drops before the deadline.
