QUEENS, NY — For one night, the Mets bats came alive just enough to support their pitching staff.
Overcoming a 4-0 deficit, the Mets scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at five, then added two more in the eighth to secure a 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night at Citi Field.
The go-ahead run came when Ronny Mauricio’s grounder was mishandled, allowing Brett Baty to score. Brandon Nimmo’s sacrifice fly brought in Francisco Alvarez for a two-run lead.
The eighth inning rally was set up by Alvarez’s double, which nearly cleared the fence but hit the wall instead. Alvarez, appearing in his first MLB game in a month after being sent to Triple-A, spoke about his performance. “It feels good and it’s super important,” Alvarez said. “Especially because we got the win. We’re here for the reason of winning.”
This marked only the third time in the Mets’ last nine games they’ve scored more than three runs, snapping a three-game losing streak with their second consecutive win.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised Alvarez’s confidence at the plate, noting his performance as a sign of control during at-bats.
Juan Soto’s two-run single in the seventh inning leveled the score at five, with New York taking advantage of Angels starter Tyler Anderson’s early exit. Francisco Lindor and Soto contributed to the Mets’ seventh-inning comeback.
Mets ace Kodai Senga, in his second start after recovering from a hamstring strain, lasted just three innings, giving up four earned runs.
Logan O’Hoppe homered against Senga, with the Angels adding three runs in the third. Taylor Ward’s two-run double and Jo Adell’s single helped Los Angeles build an early lead.
Ward went 2-for-4 with three RBI, also adding a run-scoring single in the seventh. Baty homered in the fourth for New York, continuing his strong stretch offensively.
Baty also made a key defensive play, throwing out Trout at home in the seventh to keep the deficit manageable.
The Mets bullpen, including Chris Devenski, Kevin Herget, Huscar Brazoban, Brooks Raley, and Edwin Diaz, limited the Angels to one run in the last six innings. Diaz struck out the side in the ninth to close the game.
“Mendoza praised the bullpen’s effort, highlighting their ability to hold down the game after the starter’s early exit.”
