QUEENS, NY — The Mets, struggling with home runs and facing difficulties against right-handed pitching, saw a chance to end a five-game home losing streak against the Braves. They capitalized on facing Braves starter Didier Fuentes, who had a poor season record.
The Mets scored five runs in the fourth inning and totaled six off Fuentes, securing a 7-3 victory over their NL East rivals. Prior to this, New York (47-34) had managed just six runs in the first two games of the series.
Juan Soto hit two home runs, and Ronny Mauricio had three hits, including a home run. Mauricio opened the scoring with a home run in the third inning, and Soto followed with one in the fourth.
Soto hit his 10th homer in June during the seventh inning, tying him with Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez for the most NL homers that month. This marked Soto’s 27th multi-home run game, a record for players under 27.
In the fourth inning, after Soto’s first home run, the Mets took control. Fuentes hit Pete Alonso, allowed a double to Jeff McNeil, and a single to Starling Marte, all on fastballs. Brett Baty singled on a curveball, Mauricio added a single, and catcher Hayden Senger loaded the bases with a hit.
Aaron Bummer relieved Fuentes, allowing two runs, while Mets starter Clay Holmes limited the Braves to one run over five innings, allowing three hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
Holmes frequently used his sinker to induce ground balls, only throwing three fastballs among his 96 pitches. Marcell Ozuna nearly hit a home run in the first inning, but McNeil, usually an infielder, leapt to make a catch in center field.
Jonathan Pintaro, making his MLB debut, allowed two runs in the ninth. Manager Carlos Mendoza called on closer Edwin Diaz, who got Ozuna to ground out, sealing the win.
