The New York Mets overcame Los Angeles Angels pitching early, securing a 6-3 victory and a series sweep on Wednesday afternoon.
Francisco Lindor ended a hitless streak to support home runs by Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo. The Mets completed a sweep of the Angels and have now won four consecutive games, suggesting they are recovering from a difficult period in which they went 10-20 in their previous 30 games.
Starting pitcher Sean Manaea began strong, striking out the side in the first inning. In the bottom half, Nimmo initiated the scoring with a leadoff home run, his 19th of the year, putting New York ahead 1-0.
With a lead, Manaea encountered and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second inning. Angels reliever Sam Bachman also faced trouble, allowing consecutive singles but escaped unscathed due to a double play and a pop-up.
The Angels tied the game in the third, as Mike Trout homered off Manaea to the opposite field. However, the Mets responded quickly when Jake Eder came in for the Angels. A walk and a hit-by-pitch set the stage for Lindor, who ended his slump with an RBI single, making it 2-1 Mets.
Two batters later, Alonso hit a three-run homer, his 22nd of the year, extending the lead to 5-1. Lindor added another RBI single in the fourth, making it 6-1 Mets.
Alonso broke out of a slump, contributing two hits. Manager Carlos Mendoza praised Alonso and Lindor for their performance, emphasizing their importance to the team.
Manaea settled in after the early trouble, retiring his last seven batters over five innings, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts. Huascar Brazoban pitched a scoreless sixth inning, but Jose Buttó struggled in his return, allowing two runs before being relieved by Brooks Raley, who ended the threat.
The Angels kept the game close thanks to Eder’s efforts, allowing five runs over six innings with seven strikeouts. In the eighth, they pressured Edwin Diaz into a four-out save. Diaz overcame challenges to secure the save despite some controversy.
The Mets improved their record to 59-44, while the Angels fell to 49-53. New York will begin a six-game road trip in California on Friday against the San Francisco Giants, with Mets’ Clay Holmes facing Giants’ Logan Webb. The game is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. Eastern on July 25.
