New York City Mayor Eric Adams has exercised his veto to provide Bally’s Corporation with a crucial chance in obtaining one of three downstate casino licenses. Earlier in July, the City Council had turned down the proposal for commercial use of the Bronx site, which includes a former Trump Organization golf course. Mayor Adams used his veto on Wednesday, giving the council ten days to overturn it with a two-thirds majority. He explained that his decision aims to ensure a competitive and fair process for the casino license applications.
Concerns have been raised that the Trump Organization could receive a $115 million payout if Bally’s license is approved. This payout would occur if the New York State Gaming Commission finalizes its decisions by the end of 2025. Previously, Mayor Adams assisted Bally’s by supporting a proposal in June to reclassify the site from parkland, allowing it to pass with 26 votes instead of the usual 34.
When questioned about possible favoritism, Mayor Adams, aged 64, stated that his veto does not endorse or give an advantage to any casino bid over others.
