Mathieu Darche Mending Islanders' Bond With Fans - SCCG Management

New York Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche used a familiar approach among NHL executives: he wrote a letter to the fans. This straightforward action capped off a busy first two months leading the organization. During this time, he traded star defenseman Noah Dobson to the Montreal Canadiens, drafted a potential franchise cornerstone in defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the No. 1 overall pick, and navigated a free-agency period that retained key role players while adding new potential game-changers.

“Thank you for welcoming my family and me to Long Island. The New York Islanders’ organization is first-class, and I am honored to represent the team as the general manager and executive vice president. At the draft party and throughout development camp, I saw the incredible passion of this fan base up close, and I can’t wait to see you all at UBS Arena on opening night. Over the past two months, we’ve spoken about having a team that plays with pace and is defensively sound. This remains our direction. We executed on our plan for the NHL Draft and free agency, and are thrilled with the acquired talent. We will continue working towards next season, and I assure you that everything we do is in the best interest of the New York Islanders and our ability to deliver you a team this season that competes every night. We have a bright future for seasons to come and it’s a privilege to take this journey with you.”

For almost a decade under previous leadership led by Lou Lamoriello, Islanders fans were deprived of such a gesture. This recent action is a testament to how some transparency can make a significant impact.

The metaphorical and literal doors have reopened. The night they drafted Schaefer, Victor Eklund, and Kashawn Aitcheson in the first round, the Islanders hosted their first draft party since 2018—the first one at UBS Arena. Rookie development camp, previously exclusive to media, was open to thousands of fans throughout the week-long event, showcasing Schaefer in full Islanders gear for the first time.

Fans now feel more connected to their team, bridging a gap that had widened, especially during the COVID pandemic. Darche is meeting his own standards of transparency, emphasized during his introductory press conference in May when he expressed how crucial this concept is.

“I’m going to be honest. That’s my way of being with people,” he said. “The fans are passionate, so they want to know everything, I get it, but I still have to do my job the best way possible. So I’ll be as transparent as I can, that’s the way it’s going to work.”
