Two years ago, the teenager was playing at non-league Rochdale. Now, he’s a standout player for a Premier League team.
Wolves were not expected to find optimism this season, especially not from an 18-year-old who was at a non-league club just two years back. However, on a day that many predicted would be another disappointing one for Wolves, with relegation appearing unavoidable following a 19-game winless stretch, Mateus Mané – making his first league start at Molineux – emerged as the unexpected spark for a change in fortunes.
Mané proved pivotal as Wolves triumphed over West Ham 3-0 in early January. He provided a crucial pass to Hwang Hee-chan, who set up Jhon Arias for Wolves’ opening goal, then earned the penalty that doubled their lead. And, just as the match seemed concluded, he outmaneuvered Soungoutou Magassa and fired a low shot past Alphonse Areola, scoring his first senior goal and sealing a personal triumphant influence on Wolves’ first league victory of the season.
